TeachWell is based on the premise that when we take the time to build our own social-emotional wellness and capacity, we are more effectively equipped to teach and model social-emotional learning and wellness to students. We believe this leads to a greater sense of efficacy in the classroom and more resilience for the individual educator.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Within the education community, we’ve identified a wide range of social-emotional learning skills. For our purposes, we focus on the five core competencies identified by CASEL:

  • Self-Awareness

  • Social Awareness

  • Relationship Skills

  • Self-Management

  • Responsible Decision-Making

We believe these five core competencies are both broad enough to incorporate the most effective SEL skills and specific enough to give educators applicable skills in their personal and professional lives. In addition to these academic SEL skills, we also weave in themes of compassion, self-compassion, gratitude & resilience. A deeper understanding and integration of these various skills will strengthen their practice as educators and facilitate their own social-emotional wellness.

I have been aware of my personal self care, which then helps me be more patient with my students. I have incorporated the concept of self-efficacy into my casual and goal setting conversations with students.
